The visual assessment of welded joints is an important link between the execution and approval of welding work.
In addition to a thorough knowledge of the welding imperfections that may occur, the visual welding inspector must have an understanding of the welding process used, the welded materials and the requirements for the quality of the welding work.

Target group

  • Welders: the welder must first carry out a (self) inspection and, where necessary, repair the imperfection.
  • Welding coordinators: they must randomly check the inspection carried out by the welder.
  • Quality staff: they must monitor the overall quality, including the quality of the welds.

Content

The three steps for performing a visual inspection will be explained and practised in a practical manner:

  1. classification/recognition of welding imperfections in relation to the welding processes (TIG, MIG/MAG, electrode) + practical exercise 'recognising welding imperfections'
  2. determining the quality level (check type and %)
  3. introduction to visual weld inspection according to EN ISO 17637 and whether or not to accept (= approve or reject) weld imperfections according to EN ISO 5817

And additionally:

  • Welding quality levels and the link with steel structures (EN 1090) – rolling stock (EN 15085) – pressure vessels (PED) - ...
  • Introduction to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and the link with quality levels
  • Explanation of measuring equipment
  • Practical exercise in assessing welds + reporting visual weld assessments (break test, fillet weld, butt weld)
  • Test: Performing, interpreting & reporting visual inspection for fillet weld or butt weld.

This course does NOT provide a VT-w2 (Visual Welding Inspector Level 2) certificate in accordance with EN ISO 9712 but just a certificate of participation.
