Corrosion test for CLP-regulation (Test C.1)
Test C.1: Metal corrosion in accordance with CLP guidelines

|
Find out whether your product is correctly classified in accordance with the CLP Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008). BWI carries out professional corrosion tests in accordance with the Regulation, under accreditation, resulting in a clear report for each product. This is done quickly, accurately and in full compliance with the European CLP Regulation. |

Under the CLP Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008), products and mixtures must be classified under the category ‘Corrosive to metals’. BIL can assist you in carrying out the tests to determine the corrosivity of these products. The ‘Test C1’ is carried out as described in Section 37.4 of Part III of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria. |
| For this test, the BWI holds the necessary EN/ISO 17025 accreditation as required by the European Directive. | |
Description of the test
In the standard tests, metal coupons are exposed to the liquid at 55°C for 7 days. For each liquid, three coupons are exposed in different positions: fully submerged, half-submerged and not submerged (gas phase). The test is carried out using both carbon steel and aluminium, each in a separate test setup. A total of 6 coupons per liquid are tested.
Evaluation is based on determining the uniform corrosion rate from weight loss. If localised corrosion is detected, the maximum localised damage is also measured using a microscopic section.
A single, clear test report is drawn up for each product, stating whether or not the product should be classified as ‘corrosive to metals’ in packaging group III / category 1 in accordance with point 2.16 of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Link to ADR legislation
The “European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road”, in short “ADR”, contains a series of regulations that must be complied with when transporting hazardous chemicals.
Chemicals classified as dangerous goods are divided into different classes. Class 8 comprises so-called corrosive substances:
- Packing group I: Substances with high corrosivity
- Packing group II: Corrosive substances
- Packing group III: Slightly corrosive substances
Based on the result of the CLP corrosion test, it can be assessed whether a substance belongs in Class 8 – packing group III.
Commonly tested products
Biocides, cleaning products, hygiene products
